Given that most people use their living rooms as a place to relax and watch television, it’s not surprising that the TV is often the focal point of any sitting room. This is even more pronounced if you have one of the huge, big-screen models that are so common these days. Of course there are other things that you can make a focal point – the fireplace, a piece of art, even a large fish tank…
But if you decide that you want the television to be the focal point, you need to design a suitable layout for your room. The most important thing when designing a room layout is to make sure that the layout meets the needs of that particular room. There is a huge social aspect to watching TV – you can be watching a sports event, a concert or a film. Therefore you need to make sure everyone can easily see the TV and each other.
You can make a wall a focal point by mounting your TV on the wall above your fireplace therefore creating two items of interest for people to be drawn to. This also elevates the TV so it is easy to see. Arrange the sofas and coffee tables so people are not having to crane their necks to see and so the sofa is facing the TV screen.
Alternatively, invest in a television cabinet where you can house not only the television but also the DVD/ video player and speakers. This way you can also use the shelves to display your DVDs and therefore the cabinet becomes more of an entertainment area. Often the cabinets will have doors so you can shut your TV away at any time when you want other aspects of your room to draw the eyes – for instance if you are showing potential buyers around the house.
