According to The New York Times Robert Redford has been named the winner of the 2008 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, one of the largest awards in the arts, the prize’s trust said. Charles Robert Redford, Jr. (born August 18, 1936)[1] is an Academy Award-winning American film director, actor, producer, businessman, model, environmentalist and philanthropist.

Bestowed to Mr. Redford in recognition of his films, his activism and his creation of the Sundance Institute, the 15-year-old prize is awarded annually to “a man or woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life,” the trust said. Mr. Redford is scheduled to receive the prize, which includes a $325,000 grant, in a ceremony at the Hudson Theater on Nov. 12.
