Jules Dassin.

Jules Dassin (or Julius Dassin) was born in 12.18.1911 in Middletown, Connecticut. He was one of eight children in a religion Jewish family which came to US from Odessa, Russia. (his parents  were Samuel Dassin  and Berta Fogelin, the name they got from town Odessa where they came from). Soon after his burning all the family moved to NY, Harlem.  There Jules finished Morrison Bronx School. After that he moved to Europe for continuation his study, but came back soon to start his career as actor with the ARTEF company in New York (Yiddish Proletarian Theater). This innovatory theatre group was created by producer Benno Schneider. As inmate of the famous Russian Vahtangov theatre school Habima, Benno Schneider hold with MHAT traditions + avant-garde’s influence, which was very fashionable in that time.  So Jules becomes an actor of that group taking part in all performances, at the same time he tries himself as a script writer. After ARTEF disintegration in 1940 he begins to come up as producer.

After successful release “Medicine Show “ Dassin gets an invitation to work in Hollywood. During his Hollywood’s period (1940-th) Jules Dassin shoots a number of full-length tapes but sharply feeling absence of creative freedom makes him to break off the contract in 1947 and to return to NY. Here he starts to cooperate with independent movie companies and suddenly one behind another removes four cult detective films in noir neo-realism style for a short while successfully found by it, which bring him popularity and cash success – Brute Force (brute force), 1947; Naked City (the naked city, in New York), 1948; Thieves’ Highway (thieves’ highway, in San Francisco), 1949; And Night and the City (night and city, in London), 1950.
It is evident that in these works Dassin shows his preference to suspense, tenseness, also he carries off his shooting out of pavilions and uses unprofessional supers and it was highly different from existing film practices.
